After writing lots of Drop Rob•Boxes (drag-and-drop utilities), I've been trying to figure out what icon design is the best. I don't like some of the “grater”-style icons, because it’s almost impossible to depict what the application actually does when most of the picture is taken up by that grater icon.
So here is a couple of other ideas. I personally like the one with the big arrow and the pictures inside, because it follows Apple’s icon drawing techniques (for example, control panels and extensions have those special kinds of icon, etc.). The one with the little arrow in the corner is interesting because it is just an application icon minus the hand. The third is another version of this, with the arrow in the place of the hand. Obviously, the colors are not important. But I think that we might need a standard for these drop box icons so the user knows that the application is meant primarily for drag-and-drop.
